Ship Central Cooling System

Main engine of a ship requires maximum efficiency to operate for a long hour without failure. Due to long operating hours, the engine will become hot which required cooling to avoid overheating and breakdown. The heat exchanger can be attached beside the main engine for cooling purposes to reduce footprint and allow the engine to operate at maximum efficiency.

Which are the two cooling system we can use to cooldown the engine?

1. Seawater cooling system - The seawater is used as a cooling media in a heat exchanger to cool down the clean water and lubricating oil.

2. Freshwater or central cooling system - Freshwater is used in a closed circuit to cool down the engine room machinery. The freshwater returning from the heat exchanger after cooling the machinery is further cooled by seawater in a sea-water cooler. The process flow is as shown above where UX-90 can be used as Central Clean Water Cooler and the CX-10 series being used as Main Engine Clean Water Cooler.

MGO Cooling System

Low-sulfur content fuel such as MGO is used for the diesel engines of a ship due to the environmental regulations for its exhaust gas. MGO is less viscous and create friction when the surrounding temperature is hot which affect the combustion inside the engines. Plate heat exchanger can be installed to cooldown the MGO temperature to increase its viscosity and reduce friction happend in the engine.

In this scenario, UX-10 series with "Pressure Buffer" device can be installed to cooldown the fuel temperature to increase the durability of the diesel engine.

Our Suggestion On Common Maintenance Issues

Issue 1: Trash accumulation inside strainer

Issue 1: Trash accumulation inside strainer

This issue may occur due to the heat exchanger has been run for a long time channeling seawater. Seawater contains foreign objects which required a filter by a strainer. Trash accumulation inside the strainer of the heat exchanger will affect its performance.

HISAKA suggestions:
  • Install inner strainer to your seawater cooler.
  • Prepare a standby unit of heat exchanger for interexchange when doing maintenance.
  • Plan preventive maintenance ahead.
Water sedimentation fouling

Issue 2: Muddy fouling on plates

This issue is occurred due to the ship is sailing through muddy water area and the inner strainer is unable to filter out the muddy water which causes muddy fouling on plates. This will reduce the heat transfer performance of the heat exchanger.

HISAKA suggestions:
  • When sailing through muddy water, periodic cleaning is required.
  • Prepare additional unit of complete plate pack for interchange when cleaning.
